Professor Mary Boatemaa Setrana, IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa and Director of the Centre for Migration Studies, University of Ghana, has been featured by the Metropolis International Migration Network in a special conversation titled “Migration has always had a positive impact.”

The feature explores Prof. Setrana’s reflections on migration, mobility, belonging and the social relationships that shape African migration experiences. Drawing from her personal and academic journey, she emphasizes that migration is not simply an individual act, but a shared process involving families, communities, expectations and responsibilities across borders.

Prof. Setrana also highlights the need to rethink how African migration is understood and governed. She calls for greater attention to African scholarship, local knowledge and lived experiences in shaping migration policy, noting that effective migration governance must be grounded in the realities of the people and communities most affected.

The feature aligns closely with the mandate of the IDRC Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, which seeks to generate evidence-based knowledge, amplify local voices and provide inclusive, gender-transformative solutions to forced displacement in the region.

Through her work, Prof. Setrana continues to advance African-centered migration research, strengthen policy engagement, mentor emerging scholars and contribute to global conversations on migration, displacement and development.
