The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Research Chair on Forced Displacement in Anglophone West Africa, led by Prof. Mary B. Setrana, in collaboration with the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) and other academic partners, convened an international conference on forced displacement from 26-28 March 2026 in Saint-Louis, Senegal.
Held under the theme “Rethinking Forced Displacement in Africa”, the conference brought together scholars, researchers and practitioners to examine emerging forms of forced displacement and their implications for African societies.
Hosted at the Laboratory for the Analysis of Societies and Powers / Africa–Diasporas (LASPAD), University Gaston Berger, the conference was organised within the MIASA Outreach Programme in collaboration with the Laboratory for Studies and Research on Social Dynamics and Local Development (LASDEL), Niamey, Niger, and Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany.
The programme featured academic presentations and panel sessions examining displacement, mobility and migration, citizenship and refugee status, intra-African mobility, humanitarian protection and solidarity, and the changing role of borders in contexts of insecurity and displacement.
The conference provided the IDRC Research Chair, MIASA and other partners with an important platform to strengthen scholarly collaboration, expand research networks and deepen engagement with institutions and researchers working on forced displacement across Africa.
The engagements also created opportunities to build stronger networks for knowledge exchange, collaborative research and policy influence, contributing to efforts to shape evidence-based responses to forced displacement across the continent.
The conference further reinforced the Chair’s commitment to generating evidence, strengthening research capacity and contributing to policy and scholarly debates on forced displacement in Anglophone West Africa and the wider African continent.
